Varifocals

Correcting your vision over a wide range of distances

Varifocals combine three prescriptions into one lens, meaning you can see near, intermediate and far distances – so you don’t have to waste time, money and energy buying and using separate pairs of glasses for different distances.

The most common features are:

  • Bigger sections of the lenses for looking at a distance.
  • Bigger sections of the lenses for reading and looking close up.
  • Wider field of view.
  • Reduced peripheral distortion.
  • Reduced “soft focus” sections.

Varifocals combine three prescriptions into one lens, meaning you can see near, intermediate and far distances.

The strength of the lens graduates from the top to the bottom which is what enables users to see multiple distances whereas a bifocal has a visible division across the lens.

We suggest varifocals because:

  • It is much more convenient to be able to see all distances instead of using separate pairs of glasses.
  • Aesthetically, they are much more pleasing than bifocals due to the fact the noticeable line has been removed.

However, varifocals cannot guarantee completely clear vision. You will find that small sections of the lenses have softer focus, but the quantity of this can be controlled by the lenses select.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

The top of the lense allows you to see far away, the centre is what lets you see middle distances and the bottom is for reading and looking close up. These three prescriptions are merged so that you are not jumping between strengths.

HOW TO USE THEM:

Simply adjust your gaze to either the top, middle or bottom of the lenses depending on how far you are trying to see. For example if you are reading a book you would lower your eyes to look through the lower section. To look at intermediate distances, look through the middle and for long distances look through the top.

DIFFERENT TYPES

There are numerous kinds of varifocals available, providing various features which can benefit you according to your preferences.

The most common features are:

  • Bigger sections of the lenses for looking at a distance.
  • Bigger sections of the lenses for reading and looking close up.
  • Wider field of view.
  • Reduced peripheral distortion.
  • Reduced “soft focus” sections.

GOOD VARIFOCAL LENSES:

These are usually best for first time wearers of varifocals and are a better substitute for bifocals.

The focal areas are relatively wide but there will be some soft focus near the border of the lenses.

BETTER VARIFOCAL LENSES:

This type is very popular for day-to-day use as they help to better your eyesight. The fields of view are better than the standard varifocals for all distances as well has having reduced soft focus.

BEST VARIFOCAL LENSES:

The field of view in premium varifocals are the widest for all distances due to the fact that the lens is custom fit to the frame of your glasses. In comparison to the standard varifocals, the vision overall is much more clearer and focused.
